Exerpt from OZ - Chronicles of Courage

As Captain Michael Eisenstadt, Army Special Forces veteran of Desert Storm said, "Jewish soldiers have an important role in today's military. Each generation has its own battles to wage. Each generation has its own challenges to deal with as American society changes from generation to generation."

"I think the most important thing - and this is one of the things I've seen in my own military service - is that the role of Jews who are actively serving has a great impact on fellow soldiers in terms of being an example for some people. I might be the only Jew they have met. As a result, I feel a certain sense of obligation to conduct myself, to compose myself in a certain way because I recognize that people will perceive narrowly as who I am in terms of my rank, and my position., but also they know that I am Jewish. And I know that they will reflect on other Jews that they might meet elsewhere later in their life. So that, I think, to me that is the main challenge. That's the one reason why I think it's important that although we have the voluntary military now, there are no quotas and there are no requirements for anybody to serve. I think that it is important for Jews to serve in the military because it's one of the fundamental institutions of American democracy."
